Microsoft just announced that they’re working on a Xbox set-top box, don’t get too excited yet, it isn’t a console or the new Xbox 720, the Xbox set-top box is part of a two-SKU strategy for Microsoft next gen of Xbox hardware. The device is a low-cost alternative for its Xbox console, designed to give access to “Core entertainment devices” , the device will run Windows 8 and will support casual game titles and other features like streaming (we don’t know anything more about other features it will have). We do know that it will support some kind of TV streaming service (Live TV through the internet instead of your standard TV cable) Microsoft had the following things to say about its new Xbox set-top box

“Xbox 360 has found new ways to extend the console lifecycle by introducing controller-free experiences with Kinect and re-inventing the console with a new dashboard and new entertainment content partnerships. We are always thinking about what is next for our platform and how to continue to defy the lifecycle convention.

Depends how you look at it, its just a way for Microsoft to get more of their devices into our living room, probably has something to do with the whole Xbox live integration in the new Windows phones & Microsoft Surface. What do you think? Is it something you’re looking forward to? Make sure to share your opinion with us and leave a comment bellow!
